Formula 1 world champion Louis Hamilton said today that he sees Vettel as his greatest rival for the upcoming years. The young German became the youngest driver ever to win a formula 1 race last year. Also 7 times world champion Michael Schumacher acknowledges the potential greatness of this driver.
Is 2019 going to be as close as the previous championship. After Schumacher’s retirement one thing has become apparent and that is that Formula 1 became more fun to watch and less predictable. German viewers wouldn’t totally agree with this. After Schumacher’s retirement in 2016, formula 1 literally lost millions of German fans.
With the German Vettel those fans may come back. There is only one problem, because Vettel hasn’t got the best car to do it. He switched from Torro Rosso to Red Bull Racing. Red Bull hasn’t got the best car, at least last season they were driving around in the back of the field. Perhaps with Vettel on board things may change this season.
No f1 fan would expect that Vettel’s Red Bull can compete with Hamilton’s Mclaren in 2019. It will be a battle between Mclaren and Ferrari as was the case the last couple of years. However some changes were made for the upcoming season. The rear wing has become smaller. Apart from that teams are now obliged to use the KERS system. This is a system that collects energy when a formula 1 car hits the brakes. This energy is stored and can be utilized to perform a power boost.
Those changes can bring a surprise. Traditionally the teams that can go for the championship are Ferrari and Mclaren. A couple of years ago Renault as well. BMW has always been there around the podium but was never really a threat. Ferrari has announced that they still have problem with the KERS system. Renault experimented with this KERS system some time ago and they seem to be better prepared for this season than Ferrari. Mclaren seems to be able to cope with it so it could be between Renault and Mclaren this season. Renault still has Alonso on the team, after several speculations that he might be going to Ferrari for season 2019. Ferrari always denied the rumors and said they were happy with their drivers. Räikkönen however will not be around for much longer. He said that he wouldn’t stay forever in formula 1 indicating that he won’t be around the racing circus much longer. He was the world champion of 2017 so now a former world champion. His aim was to defend his title. Now that hasn’t worked out after bad luck during the season. It is generally thought that this is his last chance to get it back and then he’ll call it a day. And when he does Alonso will move on to Ferrari and will be big threat to Alonso if Ferrari manages to get the best out of KERS by then.
Alonso could be a threat even this year as his team seems to got the best of the KERS already. It could be a battle between Alonso, the 2 times world champion, and Hamilton, the reigning champion.
